However they differ when seen from underneath - the older has a sliding door to access the ball while the newer has a door that you rotate a bit to open/close. The older has way better grip on the surface and doesn't need any mouse pad or so while the newer easily slips. Unless you have tried both these then I suggest that you do that. @Pete
