Amiga PSU 312503-03 + Recap + LED Digital Volt-Amps Meter

April 30th, 2023 1 comment
Commodore Power Supply 312503-03 +Recap + LED Digital Volt-Amps Meter

After the usual boring PSU recap i have decided to add two displays to monitoring the main voltages (+5,+12) and the amperage.

The amperage displayed with the blue LEDs in the left display is the sum of all the voltages (+5,+12,-12).

I have also added three ventilation holes, i didn’t want to use any fans, i already have enough fans in the lab that are quite annoying.

Testing Greaseweazle V4

The Greaseweazle USB device lets you to connect an old floppy disk drive to your modern computer to read/write floppy disks from any system with Shugart standard drives (Amiga, Atari, Commodore, Amstrad, Sinclair, PC, CNC machines, musical instruments, etc).

Greaseweazle allows versatile floppy drive control over USB. By extracting the raw flux transitions from a drive, any disk format can be captured and analysed – PC, Amiga, Amstrad, PDP-11, musical instruments, industrial equipment, and more.

The Greaseweazle also supports writing to floppy disks, from a range of image file formats including those commonly used for online preservation (ADF, IPF, DSK, IMG, HFE, …).

Sega Megadrive Mini 2

Sega Megadrive Mini 2

Some time has passed since the last and useless purchase and like the previous ones there is little to say all the “mini” are practically identical, change the external box, the menu and some chips inside that for the occasion are the latest version (more or less).

I used a very lame HDMI to Composite Video converter to try it with a CRT monitor.

Kung Fu Flash Cartridge Firmware Update v1.34

January 30th, 2022 No comments

A new version of the firmware for the Kung Fu Flash Cartridge by Kim Jørgensen is released.

Changelog from version v1.21 to 1.34:

  • Fix broken mount D64 file option (since v1.33)
  • Improve disk drive emulation to support Sidplay64. Thanks Actarus, Fabuseta, mwedmark, and Seni1ix
  • Support basic SD2IEC commands.
  • Optimized code to make it all fit in flash.
    • In this version the following cartridge types will not require the firmware file on the SD card:
    • Normal cartridge (8k, 16k, Ultimax)
    • Fun Play, Power Play
    • Super Games
    • Ocean type 1
    • Epyx Fastload
    • C64 Game System, System 3
    • Dinamic
    • Zaxxon, Super Zaxxon
    • Magic Desk, Domark, HES Australia
    • EasyFlash
    • Prophet64
    • RGCD, Hucky
    • Drean
    • C128 Normal Cartridge (external function ROM)
  • Combined PAL and NTSC firmware.
  • T64 support (normal tape files only). Thanks Matthias.
    • The firmware has been extended to support both PAL and NTSC and this requires the KungFuFlash_v1.30.upd file to be kept in the root directory of the SD card.
    • Older firmware will not support this extended format so KungFuFlash_v1.30_upgrade.upd must be used first. This file is not needed after the upgrade process has been completed.
  • Fix broken EasyFlash VIC-II/C128 mode. Thanks mrr19121970.
  • Improve detection of C64 clock signal.
  • Add simple diagnostic tool.
    • The diagnostic tool is started by pressing the menu button for 2 seconds (until the LED turns off) and is intended to help debug stability problems on some C64 models.
    • The tool can also be started in a USB only mode if Kung Fu Flash refuses to start at all. In this mode debug data is send via USB only and the C64 should start normally (boot to Basic). This mode is started by pressing both the special and menu button for 2 seconds, then releasing the menu button followed by the special button.
    • For reference the phi2 clock frequency should be around 985248 Hz for PAL and around 1022727 Hz for NTSC.
  • Add support for Drean cartridges. Thanks beatmaster13.
  • Add support for C128 normal cartridge. Thanks phako.
  • Fix unstable EF3 USB. Thanks dikdom.
  • Add support for Super Games cartridge.
  • Add support for Prophet64 cartridge.
  • Fix broken Fun Play/Power Play cartridge support (since v1.16)
  • Add support for RGCD and Hucky cartridges. Thanks Konstantin19.
  • Load extensionless files as PRG.
  • Add support for WarpSpeed by SvOlli. Thank you.
  • Add support for Freeze Frame/Freeze Machine. Thanks gold11-carca.
  • Fix bug reading UPD file using FAT16. Thanks cosmo6128.

Changelog (v0024):

  • PDS/COV/COS files run PDSPLAY/COVPLAY/COSPLAY
  • added ability to select (TAB) CAR files
  • selected files (ATR, CAS, CAR) don’t have to be in the same directory anymore, selection is cleared only after returning to the selector

  • search now allows navigation during searching and editing search string
  • CTRL-L disables item shortcuts and allows starting search by typing instead of ‘/’
  • ESC stops search, exiting search requires 2x ESC (to prevent accidental exit when search stops at the same time user tries to stop it)
  • disable cart was changed to SHIFT-ESC
  • short filenames should finally (hopefully) have proper case
  • filenames longer than screen width should be (finally) properly sorted
  • type 57 (2kB) fixed

Commodore MMF 9000 (SuperPET 9000) Repair & Testing

January 30th, 2018 1 comment
Commodore MMF 9000 (SuperPET 9000)

The SuperPET is a Commodore PET 8032 with one or two added boards that were designed at the University of Waterloo.

The computer has a built-in RS-232C interface and many programming languages on Floppy Disk. In Europe, this machine was called the MicroMainFrame 9000, or MMF 9000.

Let’s start to assembling the BMB Compuscience Ltd Board and Compu-Think 64K Memory Expansion board in the Commodore MMF 9000 (SuperPET)

I had to shorten the original standoffs installed in the computer because the length was wrong for the two boards BMB Compuscience/Compu-Think 64K. The long standoffs are used for the superPET Combo Board (the last one released).

It was not a simple job, obviously i have looked around for the identical standoffs with thickness, size, pitch and some with a long screw other with a short screw.

Between one phase and another i have also giving a nice clean inside and outside of the computer and of the motherboard.

Unfortunately there are a couple of problems after assembling the two boards of the MMF 9000 (SuperPET).

Defects:

  • The keyboard space bar dead.
  • Don’t runs any Waterloo program in the 6809 environment, runs only the Bootstrap menu which allows to load the programs from Floppy Disk, the Machine Language monitor and the Setup program both are in the Eprom.
  • The protection Dongle (6702) not correctly viewed from the system.

Repair/Fix:

  • The keyboard after a good cleaning has started to work well.
  • The Dongle after cleaning the contacts now works.

About the programs that don’t runs in the 6809 environment the repair was a bit longer. I have used the only program that worked under the 6809 environment, the Machine Language Monitor.

With this program i have filled the memory with the command Fill (f 9000-9fff aa) and i have changed from time to time the bytes that i was going to write in memory and  i have used the command (d 9000-) to see the results and not all memory locations are written correctly.

With the Bank Switching command (b 0, b 1 …) i have switch the memory bank, there are 16 banks of 4k each for a total of 64k.

I have found 7 x 4116 RAM failed (this card is new, never used), replaced these bad RAMs everything has started to work properly.

So my advice is to try to load the Waterloo software in the 6809 environment to make sure that the 64k memory expansion (only seen in the 6809 environment) is working properly.

Below the photos of all the tests that i have done:

  • Test with the CPU 6502 (Standard Commodore 8032/32k) with disk access, some software running in emulation 40 columns with the program: 80240.prg
  • Test with the CPU 6809 of the entire Waterloo software package with disk access.

This is a archive with documents, disk images and rom files usefully to test the computer.

DiagROM Now supports Commodore A1000

July 30th, 2017 No comments

..from the author homepage:

I have updated the DAILY version now and it now supports the A1000 using a limited version of the DiagROM. I had to remove module-tests and test-screen.  but I guess that is not that important.

Just use the A1kEVEN.bin and A1kODD.bin files and program to 27C256 proms and replace proms on the A1000 and you are ready to go.

Ultimate-II+

September 30th, 2016 No comments
Ultimate II Plus

The ‘Ultimate II+’ is a storage solution for your Commodore C64/C128(D) home computer or in stand-alone mode for C16/Plus4/VIC-20 and so on.

This cartridge implements a ‘real’ 1541 Diskdrive for Commodore computers and with a simple press on one of the buttons, a menu will pop-up on the Commodore screen, allowing the user to view the USB storage content, and ‘mount’ .d64 or .g64 images into the Floppy Drive.

These are the most important differences from the previous version of the cartridge (1541 Ultimate-II)

  • No more MicroSD! (… that needs to be pushed in with something sharp, could fall into the case, … etc)
  • More USB ports (… one to compensate for the lost SD, and just one bonus: 3 in total)
  • IEC connector moved (… further back to facilitate use on some C128 models)
  • Integrated Ethernet (… no more need for an external USB2LAN adapter, and a smaller step to CS8900A compatibility)
  • Dual Flash (… no more worry that a software bug or upgrade failure leads to a bricked device)
  • Integrated Speaker (… who connects a speaker set to the audio jack for hearing drive sounds??)
  • External power supply connector with auto-switch over circuit (… for stand alone mode, and to lower the demand on the power supply of the C64)
  • Improved Audio (… audio codec, 24 bit/96 kHz*, for sampled sounds and SID emulation)
  • Improved Tape connector (… no more custom board and able that snaps in on the bottom, but standard USB 3.0 cable)
  • Improved power supply circuits (… for some reason they seemed to break down relatively often)
  • Slightly bigger and faster FPGA, as to control the new features.
