JiffyDOS Licensing & 23256 ROM Adaptor

May 31st, 2009 No comments

23256_rom_el_pcbAs announced at the C4 EXPO, I am working with Mark Fellows (Highland IT Solutions) to finalize a licensing agreement for ‘JiffyDOS’ ROM Overlay manufacture and distribution.

In addition to hardware ROM enhancement units, I will also offer image downloads for 1541 Ultimate, C64DTV, and emulator users, as well as an amnesty offering for unlicensed copies.

To minimize manual manufacturing processes inherent in the current EPROM-based JiffyDOS offerings, my goal is to utilize the ROM-el EEPROM/FLASH solution for JiffyDOS hardware offerings.

1541-III JiffyDos Beta firmware released

May 31st, 2009 No comments

1541-iii-jiffyThis beta release of the 1541-III firmware holds lot’s and lot’s of new features. But the most important feature of it all also makes it the most useable version of all 1541-III firmware releases. Why, because it supports JiffyDos. JiffyDos consists of a fastloader that makes all disk acces much and much faster. Making the use of your precious commodore much more fun.

For those who are not familiar with the JiffyDos, just google, otherwise, thrust me. It’s really usefull. JiffyDos speeds up ALL your diskacces. Programs or games without a fastloader used to be slow… but suddenly they become as fast as… “greased lightning!!!”. So enough about JiffyDos.

Why is this release a beta release,  simply because this release holds a lot of changes made to the 1541-III’s firmware, very crucial changes. Most changes are not noticed by the user, and some are never used. But I won’t go into detail.

This release is usefull for those who want to test JiffyDos on the 1541-III. And it needs to be tested. Because it will contain bugs, therefore we need to have it tested by YOU, so YOU can make a list of programs/files that works/fails. If you can supply it with a decent description it helps us in developing/fixing the bugs. Making it into a stable release.

GoatTracker/Mac 2.68

May 22nd, 2009 No comments

goattrackerlogo

GoatTracker is a cross-platform tracker written by Lasse Öörni, producing SID chiptune music for the Commodore 64, and released with source code under the GPL. It is notable for being possibly the only SID chiptune-composer NOT native to the C64, as many alternative composers (including JCH, and CyberTracker) only execute on the C64 or inside C64 emulators.

Many SID tunes are available in various formats on the Internet, especially through the High Voltage SID Collection (HVSC). GoatTracker is capable of directly exporting to the .sid (PSID/RSID) file format in addition to standard C64 PRG files.

This Mac OS X port of GoatTracker integrates the cross-platform code with a standard Mac OS X GUI, and adds additional features, such as MIDI keyboard support and comprehensive built-in help.

ROM-el ROM Eliminator + 64Nic from Brain Innovations

Brain Innovations From the Homepage.

ROM-el ROM Eliminator: Another project of mine requires a way to replace the 2364 ROMs on Commodore computers, so I started looking for a 2764 to 2364 adapter.

After designing one, I determined that DIP EPROMs are starting to get very expensive, so I set about designing a Flash version. My tentative name is ROM-el. Since Flash is considered ROM as well, the name is a bit off, but I liked it, and only the pedantic will probably care.

64Nic: 2 64NIC+ boards arrived on April 20, and I assembled one in the evening. Initial testing with Devia’s NIC-Test was unsuccessful, so I gave up for the night. After work on the 21st, I pored over the schematics and determined I had miscopied a resistor layout from Eric Pratt’s 64NIC design. The resistor must be tied to ground, not Vcc. Dubious that such a small change would make the board work, I nonetheless made the change and …. it did nothing.

I decided I’d ruined one board, so I assembled the second board, taking care to make the resistor mod before plugging it in. Devia’s NIC-Test worked immediately. Later, I tried the apparently ruined board and it also worked, so it appears I did not completely ruin the board.

Given the success, I immediately released the board to production that evening.
